Fuel cells are devices that convert the chemical energy of a fossil fuel into electrical energy. This is at a much higher efficiency than conventional technology, using combustion of the fuel to power mechanical devices that produce electrical current. The advantages of SOFCs, compared to other types of fuel cell, are stability, low emissions, low cost and fuel flexibility. Ultra-high purity nickel oxide is a material that is commonly used in the construction of anodes for SOFCs, whereas the cathodes incorporate complex mixed oxides.
